Through a series of vignettes and portraits — shot using a refurbished P1 Bolex Standard 8 camera — Trading is a poetic image stream that presents what at first appears to be archival footage, a lost archive of street life. This blurred boundary between the present day and the past is only exposed when a signifier of our modern age traverses the frame.
The conflict we feel in these slow and poetic images draws us further into nostalgia and sorrow, while the intimacy and texture of each image brings to mind the ubiquitous image of the past. The poetic power of these images are further enhanced through the hauntingly gentle score and oral narrative that accompanies the work.
Throughout The Hawker's Song the use and juxtaposition of HD Video and Standard 8 Film creates a material comment on global pressures in the expedition of new technologies and practices of mechanised commerce.
