The Hawker's Song, Signal
Signal, Melbourne
A commissioned version of The Hawker’s Song was presented as a public artwork on two large screens at Signal for the Melbourne International Arts Festival in october 2010. It was nominated for The Age Award for the best new work in the 2010 Festival program. Signal is a new contemporary arts space established in 2009 by the City of Melbourne in a converted signal office at the Flinders Street railway Station. Signal is located on the banks of the Yarra River, and from the Southbank cultural precinct across the river the work on the large screens was framed by the central city skyline behind it. A multi-speaker sound environment along the river leading up to Signal complimented the large-scale screen images. This part of the project features closely filmed images of hawker’s faces and the sounds of hawkers calling out their songs. It focuses on the everyday, examining through gesture and tone the stress and beauty of the hawker‚Äôs songs. The soundscape, combining the calls of hawkers with sparse electronic notes and ambient noise can be heard from the speakers that extend along the riverbank. The sound accompanies viewers as they experience the work while walking towards and away from the screens.
